A new Blog and a discussion about Imann

All Right. I know i've been here before. And i have no doubt that i will be here again..I announce proudly to the rest of the world that i'm starting a blog and i have a couple of good posts in quick succession, but then i get caught up in the machinations of graduate life and forget all about this.

So here I am again with another blog. No specific title, no specific target audience..as the name suggests.. just my two cents on everything from Comics to Crap !

To kick things off i thought i'd reproduce a few bits from a recent facebook discussion we had about D.Imann, a popular music composer for tamil films. I was listening to the new soundtrack of selvaraghavan's Aayirathil Oruvan and i remembered that Imann had attempted a remix of the classic "Adho andha paravai pola" from the original Blockbuster Ayirathil Oruvan which had MGR in the lead. A couple of G-Searches later i was listening to Imann's remix of this song from the 'Action King' Arjun starrer, 'Madarasi'. For the record, the song was pretty good. Had some nice musical arrangements and a couple of neatly sung verses by Imann himself.

This was my opening statement that kicked things off on Facebook: Raghav Prashant Sundar wonders why D.Imman hasn't risen up the ranks of Tamil Music even though he's almost on par with some of the other well known composers in terms of talent. ....anyone?

Here were some interesting responses and my comments on them:

Varun, one of my facebook friends pointed out that Imann hasnt composed for one single so called big-banner production. Coming to think of it.. yes..i went through his filmography and most of his movies have been small-medium budget films.

Shammeer, one of my friends from my alma mater, Anna University echoed the same sentiment, quoting from his comment, "He is cool. He knows more as well. thing is he didnt get good directors, sundar C ruined him :) when he could make good ones for no story, he is capable of making great ones given mani rathnam or any new cool directors. he didnt get one so [f]ar. all masala music.!"

A couple of others said the same thing.. the whole sundar c - arjun - imann combination has been around for quite a while now and the movies were nothing to write home about. Interestingly some of imann's better songs have always been in movies which didnt have arjun in the lead (thiruvilayadal aarambam, thamizhan etc..)

Also, preethy (also from Anna University) was quick to point out that imann's music was either folksy or funky..and didnt have a mix of genres.. Again... in movies where arjun and sundar c werent around imann doesnt seem to have a problem dabbling with different genres.

That said, there was a little bit of talk about Imann's singing. While some said that imann was better off leaving the crooning to others... varun said that he would rate imann's singing better than the oscar winning A.R.Rahman (not sure what to say to that one...)... but i did ask shammmeer what he thought of imann in comparison to yuvan shankar raja, who is also known to croon for several of his songs..albeit in his own non-musical style.

Shammeer, always a die hard fan of yuvan refused to even consider a comparison ! :)

Well, that said.. i sincerely hope that imann finds his way in the industry and lands himself some big projects !!!

Also, if you think we should have some other discussions on topics of interest.. leave me a comment !

  2. big banners/ big director dont mean everything. Kangal Irandal is a good example. Imman just needs to come up with original/ refreshing stuff.

i am sure he is happy and ok with where he stands. thats the reason for him not improving in his subsequent albums.

  3. Guru ! Good Point.. but off-topic...can u think of any other songs like Kangal Irandal.. songs that have burst out from low budget movies to become superhits ?..

  4. one more thing ... if mani shifted to ARR after Raja ...... rahman made mani to notice his talents ..... rahman did wat raja didnt .....

but what imman does is being done by atleast a dozen of ppl in the industry ..... u can never hear a song and even remotely guess if it is by imman/mani sharma/ devi sri prasad/ srikanth deva .....

u can already see how devi sri prasad messed up his chances of striking gold with dasavatharam and kandhasami ..... we wont be hearing these songs 3-4 years from now ... it will never be shown on tv 5-6 years from now .... wats the point of his scoring for the big movie ....

at last i am glad that i dont have to pay to listen to their songs. period.

  9. hey nice post :)...

firstly on the blog : thanx for posting my comments on ur facebook post :) --- and ya oscar winning rahman rite: but rahman dint win the oscar for his singing - jai ho as everyone knws was sung by sukhwinder singh, and i don think v require an auto-tuner to judge who sings better : rahman , yuvan or imman---imman is the clear winner

    next on the comments :
i don think 90 % ppl remember any other song frm the movie subramaniyapuram other than kangal irandal... theres literally no scope for comparison. watever said and done subramanyapuram had a rustic backing script and hyped up as well as deemed to be a big film of dat year even before the release... moreover - any tune in the raag of kangal irandal wud sound gud - even if i compose --- taking no credits away from the song.

ok name a vijay film with great classic so called briliant compositions like kangal irandal that v can listen to after 4-5 years --- none literally .. except for kadhaluku mariyadhai : ilayaraja stuff no doubt. so imman obviously wasnt realy noticeable in tamizhan although the songs were really different and experimental and impressive, who wud bother to even think of a film in which a stamp bearing vijays foto s released ;)... and with that movie kalaipuli dhanu had a great fall in his life, even rajnikant's fans care about the music of superstars movie but i don think vijays fans do . - another unlucky start affecting the music director.

and w ref to dasavatharam- dsp dint compose the songs, and the masses who are goin to decide whos the best composer are not goin to bother about the re-recording...for him to strike gold- of course fletcher's and agraharam scenes had good bgms,

again "i havent seen him come to the level of kangal irandal" -- comparing a music director to a song ? :-) dats really awkward, come on wat happened to pasanga? dats wat happens to one song wonder - english teachers

and ya ... who can forget the super copy - maddy maddy in the very first film ;) and june ponal , and karu karu and.... oh my god the list goes on for hair is jeyaraj :)

on the whole even if not known for 4 award functions just for a song like kangal irandal : imman has the talent to give decent music to an entire film - whistle, tamizhan , giri... had gud RR and wholesome music,

well he has tried the classical areas too , i dnt think theres any other genre presently doing its rounds in tamil film music : apart from the 'folksy' and 'funky' and imman is a contemporary so y not he wander around the same, the only other genres wud be - the ilayaraja genre , the rahman = god genre and the copycat genres ... atleast he is not much a part of the last one . . . and no one can ever be a part of the first 2 ...

:)... thanks raghav ... really a nice discussion

  15. Imman hasn't composed many melodies...melodies are most often taken as trademark of music directors

  16. Just one small response to that.
